Identify my personal leadership strategy.

This artifact presents my personal leadership model. It illuminates my personal leadership philosophy and approach to management. Understanding where one is now is an important step for becoming the leader that one wants to be. Through my work on this artifact I was able to move closer to becoming that person.

Where did you create this artifact?

This personal leadership brand canvas was created as the final project for INMGT 600 - Organizational Leadership, during the Summer of 2021. This was the final course in my master's degree program.

What did you learn?

I learned that there is a practical, hands-on side to management experience, but to be an effective leader within an organization, it is also beneficial to understand the theories psychology of leadership, and also to understand oneself. I took this course with the goals of fine-tuning my leadership skillset. Topics covered during the eight-week course included emotional intelligence, power relationships, acquired need, situational leadership, conflict management, and agile leadership. I was asked how I want to lead in a specific organization, and to demonstrate understanding leadership expectations within my industry. Using the Lead Now Model of Leadership Development, I considered what my strength areas were and where I needed to strengthen.

How did you learn this?

The assignments related to these topics gave me more insight into my own leadership philosophy and approach. This culminated in creating the personal brand canvas artifact. This final assignment required a great deal of self-introspection and reflection. I needed to crafted brand, mission, and vision statements within the context of my profession. In addition, I had to give thought to my values, though patterns, and beliefs as a leader.

What were some challenges that you overcame?

Self-reflection can be uncomfortable. The biggest challenge in this project and the class was objectively assessing myself and being honest with myself about my own strengths and weaknesses. It required stepping out of my comfort zone. One thing that helped me through this was mindfulness practice: breathing, meditation, and awareness of negative thoughts and feelings around them. In that way I was able quiet my negative inner self-talk.

How will you apply this information in the future?

This course gave me a better understanding of myself within the context of leadership, and the artifact shows my defining traits. This will be helpful to me in carrying out my responsibilities in future leadership roles. Leadership is about working with others to build commitments towards a shared goal or vision. One's reputation as a leader is shaped by how that person interacts with others. I believe the investment I made in my personal leadership development can pay dividends for any organization I am a part of as well as just making me a more well-rounded person.
